Meeting minutes for June 4, 2001

Location: Connections, Metrotown Station Square, Burnaby

Present: Kevin Deane-Freeman (President), Brent Dozzi (Treasurer), Edmund Gin (Secretary), Jan Erik Laursen, Charlie Loo, Justin Malcolm, Andrew Happer, Sean Grant, Tyler Borges, Chris Baker.

Apologies: Kevin Oldknow (Western Province Councillor), Martin Froehling (House Liaison)

As a quorum was achieved, the meeting was called to order at 7:15pm.

  1. New Alumni

As there were no New Alumni in attendance, this item was struck off the Agenda.

  2. Executive Reports:
  3. National Report
  4. WPC Kevin Oldknow submitted his report to EG via e-mail, which was presented at the meeting. The following is his report, ad verbatim:

    "

    1. National Officer Appointments

      (a) Bob Featheringham - Executive Director
      (b) Rich Taylor - Canadian Expansion Chairman
      (c) Andy Hoshock - Expansion Assistant to the Grand Vice President

    2. Alumni Dues:
    3. There is currently a committee working at the National level, looking at issues such as dues structures, fundraising, constitution & stat code updates, etc.

One item under consideration is moving to a system in which Alumni dues are collected directly from alumni members by the National office (i.e. all Alumni members are assessed individual dues on an annual basis). It is possible that this would be accompanied by removing the annual dues currently required from Alumni chapters.

I would like to get a reaction from the Alumni members present regarding the feasibility of this system, and what their reaction would be to an individual assessment of dues."

A discussion ensued, with the general concensus being that questions be asked to KO about the structure, the amount, and the impact on Alumni Chapter National dues - ie, more information is required - before an appropriate response can be given. (Note: the recording of this section of the meeting was reviewed by KO on June 7th, 2001.)

  5. Brother Al Nemetz
  6. It was with great regret that the news was received of Brother Al Nemetz having joined the Castle Eternal. He graciously sponsored the Abe Lighthall Bursary, which is given out to a male Engineering student annually. It was noted that a card would be sent to his wife.

With regards to the Bursary, KDF noted that contact info for the UBC Awards Office would be required to investigate how to handle the Bursary in the future. EG to look into this. EG to also look into the current status of the funding of the Bursary, while KDF would contact the Awards Office once their contact info was known.

  7. Database
  8. EG reported that the database project is officially over. And there was much rejoicing.

All updated info was sent to Brother Ed Hurst (Information Systems Manager), and Executive Director Brother Bob Featheringham, under the direction of EH, would update the info on the CyberCastle. From this point onwards, Vancouver Alumni Chapter is to use National's database, eliminating the need to maintain a separate database.

  9. Convention

The 34th General Convention is scheduled for July 19th-21st, with Kappa Chapter (at Tri-State University, Angola, Indiana) as host. EG asked if anyone was planning on going. After a brief interruption, KDF re-iterated the question. All present, other than EG, indicated that they were unable to attend. EG noted that Brothers Andy Gal, Darcy Parker, and Rich Taylor would probably be at the Convention as guests.

  10. Vice President

JEL was nominated and elected unanimously to the position of Vice President of the Chapter.

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:30pm.

    Edmund Gin
