Vancouver Alumni Chapter
RE: Minutes of Alumni Meeting of May 8, 1998
Meeting at Hooters in Surrey at 7:00 PM.
Attended by: AH, RP, KD.
OLD BUSINESS
Finances
BD still needs to report back at next meeting with recommendations on
investment options and possibility of re-mortgaging chapter house if that is
required in the future.
An inspection of the fwat house needs to be conducted ASAP in order to plan
for upcoming expenses over the next few years.
BH to investigate building inspectors for completing an inspection of the
chapter house this summer. In addition, BH to find a replacement for the
downstairs fan.
RP to contact BH and work with BH in regards to house inspection.
Charitable organization
KD researched the possibility of our chapter becoming a non-profit
organization. He found that there are large costs involved: about $10,000.
It was decided that this option should not be pursued at this time.
Social Coordinator
Heiko (Spike) has accepted this position.
Web Page
KD has created a temporary page at http://members.home. net/fishbone.
Any ideas for the web site can be emailed to KD at kevindf@home.com.
In addition, any photos of alumni events or biographies.
There is a guest book available to note down comments and ideas.
National Convention
KD to contact Justin Malcolm in regards to any help required from the alumni.
Newsletter
The September newsletter should have a section on house repairs required
in the near and far future. A carefully worded section should request donations.
Describe the last year's average contribution.
Send out an additional request in the September newsletter about submissions
for the Chief's Biography.
Abe Lighthall Bursary
The following ideas were generated for the criteria of the endowed award:
The bursary should be open for both male and female engineering students.
A letter from the SPD active chapter should recommend the appropriate
candidates. The letter will indicate the applicant's achievements and involvement.
If the award cannot be monitored by the active chapter, then a letter of
recommendation should come from the Faculty of Applied Science, engineering club or EUS
to confirm the students' extra-curricular activities.
AH to inquire with UBC in regards to modifications to the criteria.
Al Nemetz's Stuff
Al Nemetz has a bunch of stuff that he needs to off load.
RP to determine what the fwat house is lacking.
NEW BUSINESS
Recent Graduates
AH to acquire new addresses and information of new graduates.
The alumni chapter should attend the last active chapter meeting
of the academic year in order to acquire addresses, etc.
Next Meeting
The week of July 8th to July 14th after AH's honeymoon.
Meeting should be in Marpole area.
ADDENDUM as of June 2, 1998:
AH contacted Julia Popo at UBC in regards to altering the criteria of the Lighthall
Bursary. She is no longer the contact. We should deal directly with Elizabeth Ko
(822-3846).
AH contacted Elizabeth Ko:
Al Nemetz contacted her recently and informed her that the award will remain
unchanged.
UBC likes to deal with the donor only as the donor is putting up the capital.
Therefore, Al Nemetz is the primary contact for UBC.
AH to contact Al Nemetz to find out what he is planning and to ensure that his
decisions are in sync with any executive decisions.
An award for males only is frowned upon by the UBC senate.
The recipient of the bursary cannot be chosen by the fraternity. UBC has to
choose the successful applicant.
The Faculty of Applied Science can recommend applicants. However, the bursary
must then become an award.
After discussion with Ms. Ko and the ideas presented during the May 8th
executive meeting, AH recommends the following criteria for the Abe Lighthall Award:
Male or female UBC student enrolled in the Faculty of Applied Science and taking a
full-course load in an engineering program.
Student volunteers and is active in the Engineering Undergraduate Society and/or
his/her engineering club.
Student writes a letter to the Faculty of Applied Science stipulating why he/she
should receive the award.
Faculty submits the letters to UBC Awards and Financial Aid to make the decision.
Each year, the EUS would be responsible for ensuring that students are aware of the
award.
The minutes above are correct to the best of my knowledge.
