OLD BUSINESS
Finances
BD should speak with VanCity Savings in regards to the Ethical Money
Market fund and determine best method of investment.
A bond fund might produce better returns than the money market, but still
have low volatility.
The money market fund should be left alone for now. BD to report back at
next meeting with recommendations.
BD to contact Ben Prins in regards to location of Chief's Memorial Award
funds.
The alumni funds should not be invested in aggressive markets as liquidity
is required.
BD to inquire about possibility of re-mortgaging chapter house if that is
required in the future.
Charitable organization
The Alumni chapter can hopefully convince people to make donations by
being able to issue tax receipts.
KD to inquire about non-profit organizations - tax implications and receipts.
Social Coordinator
KD to contact RP in regards to contacting Heiko (Spike) about taking on
this position.
Web Page
The page can list upcoming events and meeting minutes. A photo album can
also be displayed.
A guest book will allow users to sign in.
Direct access to National's web site.
Should be updated once per month.
Ed Hurst is not restricting the amount of disk space available ( up to ~200 MB).
E-mail will be set-up as "vancouver@sigphi.org" and then rebounded to AH's
or KD's e-mail address.
KD to get a basic site up first before getting too complicated.
National Convention
The Ponderosa building will be used for meetings.
The local tours available are listed in the minutes of the Supreme Council Meeting.
Dues
The September newsletter should have a section on house repairs required
in the near and far future. A carefully worded section should request
donations. Describe the last year's average contribution.
BH to investigate building inspectors for completing an inspection of the
chapter house this summer. In addition, BH to find a replacement for the
downstairs fan.
Abe Lighthall Bursary
AH to contact Al Nemetz in regards to changing the criteria of the award
for a student more involved in their club or society.
AH to purchase bottle of Oban scotch whiskey for Al Nemetz in appreciation
of taking over the award.
Chief's biography
AH to send out e-mail requesting alumni to submit stories about the Chief.
Send out additional request in the September newsletter.
Next Meeting
Friday, May 8th at 6:30 p.m. at the Hooters restaurant in Surrey.
Addendum as of April 11, 1998:
Al Nemetz has forwarded a cheque for $300 to UBC for the 1998/99 Lighthall
Bursary. He has requested that the updated amount be reflected in the
1998/99 Awards and Financial Aid reference guide.
UBC has forwarded information to Al Nemetz in regards to setting up a
perpetual account with an initial lump sum donation.
Al is presently studying this information.
AH contacted Julia Popo at UBC in regards to altering the criteria of the
Lighthall Bursary. There may be difficulties in selecting a successful
recipient if the criteria is extended beyond financial need and scholastic
standing. These two entities are really the only characteristics which can
be judged by UBC.
Julia Popo thought Al Nemetz was the primary contact for the award. She
will have to discuss our inquiry with Elizabeth Ko from the Development
Office. Ms. Ko has been corresponding with Al. AH informed Julia that Al
is strictly the donor, but as executive secretary, AH is the primary contact
for correspondence in regards to the successful award recipients.
Julia Popo will get back to AH later in the week.
The minutes above are correct to the best of my knowledge.
